General Session: Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico
Join the seven 2018 Aquaculture Small Grants Program award recipients as they present the results of their current projects funded through the Commission’s cooperative effort with NOAA’s Office of Aquaculture. The small grants program was developed to address the technical and regulatory opportunities and challenges of oyster farming in the Gulf region such as spatial planning and siting, regulatory constraints, and production challenges.
Gulf Menhaden Reference Points Workshop - Day 2
In an effort to begin the dialog needed to consider appropriate reference points for Gulf Menhaden management, the GSMFC hosting a management objectives and reference points workshop February 12-13, 2019. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Michael Jones from Michigan State Univ. Dr. Jones has worked on the Atlantic in the past with their benchmark discussions for Atlantic Menhaden. This workshop is the first step in determining if and how benchmarks can be applied to management of this population in the Gulf of Mexico.

General Session "Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles"
On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 a General Session was held to discuss the current science and status of the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Presentations included information on the 2018 sea turtle nesting season, the current population status and need for an updated stock assessment, simulating the movements of young sea turtles to predict spatiotemporal variation in their distribution, and recent studies on the carrying capacity of Kemp’s ridleys.
Lyles-Simpson Award 2018 - Christopher M. Blankenship
The Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission is pleased to announce that the 2018 Lyles-Simpson Award has been awarded to Chris Blankenship. This prestigious Award is presented annually to an individual, agency, or organization which has contributed to the betterment of the fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico through significant biological, industrial, legislative, enforcement, or administrative activities.

General Session: "Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico"
In 2016, the Commission began a cooperative effort with NOAA’s Office of Aquaculture to develop and manage a small grants program to address the technical and regulatory opportunities and challenges of oyster farming in the Gulf region. A total of six projects were funded across the Gulf at a total of $375,000. Now that those projects have been completed, each of the Principal Investigators will present the extent of their work at the General Session scheduled for Wednesday, March 14. NOAA and the Commission have launched a second year of projects which will begin next month and run through March 2019.
