SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2007

Week 1

Below is the first preliminary data summary for the 2007 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling June 4 through June 12 by the Alabama vessel A.E. Verrill, the NMFS vessel Oregon II, and by Texas vessels. Catch data from the A.E. Verrill and Oregon II were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from east of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 24.8 lb/hr in 20 fm at 29° 47' N. lat. and 88° 13' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 2.1 lb/hr in 5 fm at 30° 10' N. lat. and 88° 04' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 7.8 lb/hr in 11 fm at 30° 04' N. lat. and 88° 09' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 717 lb/hr in 20 fm at 29° 47' N. lat. and 88° 13' W. long.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 43 lb/hr in 2 fm at 29° 40' N. lat. and 93° 55' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 14.3 lb/hr in 2 fm at 29° 40' N. lat. and 93° 55' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 7.1 lb/hr in 8 fm at 26° 05' N. lat. and 97° 09' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 808.6 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 33' N. lat. and 93° 52' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by the Mississippi vessel Tommy Munro and NMFS vessel Oregon II.
