SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2009

Week 3

Below is the third preliminary data summary for the 2009 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from June 15 through June 19 by the Louisiana vessel R/V Pelican, the NMFS vessel Oregon II, and by the Texas vessel Trinity Bay. Catch data from the R/V Pelicanand Oregon II were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 25.8 lb/hr in 19 fm at 28° 32' N. lat. and 91° 20' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 26.9 lb/hr in 12 fm at 28° 59' N. lat. and 89° 30 W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 0.2 lb/hr in 15 fm at 29° 00' N. lat. and 89° 55' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 673 lb/hr in 12 fm at 28° 59' N. lat. and 89° 30' W. long.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 75.1 lb/hr in 15 fm at 28° 06' N. lat. and 96° 20' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 87.1 lb/hr in 6 fm at 28° 46' N. lat. and 95° 29 W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 20.6 lb/hr in 10 fm at 27° 03' N. lat. and 97° 19' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 507 lb/hr in 6 fm at 28° 46' N. lat. and 95° 29' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by Texas vessels and the NMFS vessel Oregon II.
