SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2006

Week 3

Below is the third preliminary data summary for the 2006 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling June 20 through June 26 by the NMFS vessel Oregon II and the Louisiana vessel Pelican. Catch data from the Pelican and Oregon II were taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 16.0 lb/hr in 15 fm at 28° 55' N. lat. and 90° 09' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 2.8 lb/hr in 9 fm at 28° 56' N. lat. and 90° 23' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 3.9 lb/hr in 11 fm at 28° 45' N. lat. and 91° 24' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 99 lb/hr in 12 fm at 29° 06' N. lat. and 89° 42' W. long.

The catch data from off Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 92.8 lb/hr in 10 fm at 26° 60' N. lat. and 97° 18' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 8.9 lb/hr in 13 fm at 27° 11' N. lat. and 97° 13' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 55.1 lb/hr in 9 fm at 26° 19' N. lat. and 97° 08' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 407.8 lb/hr in 5 fm at 27° 45' N. lat. and 97° 06' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by the NMFS vessel Oregon II and Texas vessels.
