SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2005

Week 4

Below is the fourth preliminary data summary for the 2005 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico . This week's summary includes sampling June 16 - June 23 by Texas vessels, sampling June 24 - June 26 by the R/V Tommy Munro, and sampling June 20 - June 25 by the NMFS vessel Oregon II. Catch data from the R/V Tommy Munro and Oregon II were taken with a 40-ft trawl. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-on. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids. The number in each grid square is the average catch or count from all stations (may be one or more stations) that were sampled within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from east of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate for brown shrimp was 13.4 lb/hr in 9 fm at 30° 02' N. lat. and 88° 40' W. long. The highest catch rate of white shrimp was 10.3 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 48' N. lat. and 88° 46' W. long. The highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 4.0 lb/hr in 12 fm at 29° 33' N. lat. and 88° 38' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 385 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29° 48' N. lat. and 88° 46' W. long. No white shrimp were caught during this sampling period east of the Mississippi River.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 42.5 lb/hr in 16 fm at 27° 25' N. lat. and 97° 00' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 23.1 lb/hr in 14 fm at 26° 26' N. lat. and 97° 03' W. long. The highest catch rate for pink shrimp was 29.1 lb/hr in 7 fm at 28° 18' N. lat. and 96° 23' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 1,426.5 lb/hr in 13 fm at 26° 52' N. lat. and 97° 14' W. long.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly report will be by the NMFS vessel Oregon II, and Texas vessels.
