SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2004

Week 5

This is the fifth preliminary data summary for the 2004 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling on June 21 and June 29 by Texas vessels and sampling June 29 through July 5 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II. Catch data from the Texas vessels were taken with 20-ft trawls. Catch data from the OREGON II were taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Plotted catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl (20-ft trawl x 2). Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 36.7 lb/hr of 60-count shrimp in 11 fm at 28°57.0' N. lat. and 93°56.9' W. long. No white shrimp were caught west of the River during this sampling period. The catch data from west of the Mississippi River indicated that the highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 13.7 lb/hr of 28-count shrimp in 11 fm at 28°57.0' N. lat. and 93°56.9' W. long. The maximum total catch rate west of the River excluding the three shrimp species was 314 lb/hr in 17 fm at 28°39.7' N. lat. and 93°26.2' W. long, with no predominant species.

The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of brown shrimp was 56.1 lb/hr of 42-count shrimp in 11 fm at 28°54.6' N. lat. and 94°22.3' W. long. The highest catch rate for white shrimp was 48.8 lb/hr of 16-count shrimp in 6 fm at 29°06.5' N. lat. and 95°01.5' W. long. The catch data from Texas indicated that the highest catch rate of pink shrimp was 21.4 lb/hr of 32-count shrimp in 11 fm at 28°54.6' N. lat. and 94°22.3' W. long. The maximum total catch rate excluding the three shrimp species was 711 lb/hr in 6 fm at 29°06.5' N. lat. and 95°01.5' W. long., with no predominant species.
