SEAMAP Real-time Plots for the year 2000

Week 5

This is the fifth preliminary data summary for the 2000 SEAMAP Summer Shrimp/Groundfish Survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This week's summary includes sampling from July 4 through July 9 by the NOAA Ship OREGON II off the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Catch data from the OREGON II was taken with a 40-ft trawl.

Catch rates have been converted to pounds per hour for a 40-ft trawl. Shrimp counts are heads-off. Catch rates for finfish are given in the charts divided by 10; e.g., a charted catch rate of 19 means 190 lb/hr. The squares on the charts are 10-minute grids and contain an average catch or count from one or more sampling stations within a particular grid. The sampling stations were located randomly by depth zone.

No samples were taken east of the Mississippi River during this sampling period. The catch data west of the River indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 15.4 lb/hr of 29-count shrimp at 28°28.2' N. lat. and 93°47.9' W. long., in 25 fm. Only 1 pink shrimp was caught west of the River.

The highest finfish catch rate west of the River was 88 lb/hr reported in 25 fm at 28°27.3' N. lat. and 93°55.7' W. long., with longspine porgy as the predominant finfish species.

The catch data for Texas indicated that the highest brown shrimp catch rate was 47.7 lb/hr of 29-count shrimp at 28°00.6' N. lat. and 95°29.7' W. long., in 29 fm. The highest white shrimp catch rate was 35.9 lb/hr of 13-count shrimp at 28°30.1' N. lat. and 94°22.4' W. long., in 5 fm. Pink shrimp were caught at one station with a catch rate of 7.7 lb/hr of 27-count shrimp at 29°03.6' N. lat. and 94°18.0' W. long., in 10 fm.

The highest finfish catch rate for Texas was 604 lb/hr reported in 6 fm at 29°28.6' N. lat. and 94°21.4' W. long., with croaker as the predominant finfish species.

Sampling coverage for the next weekly period will be in Louisiana and Mississippi waters by the OREGON II and TOMMY MUNRO.
